In light of a new AAA survey that says 2/3 of dog owners routinely pet, feed or play with their dogs while they drive, I asked if you would favor a law that says a car-riding pet must be restrained in the vehicle, rather than being "free to move about the cabin." Twice as many of you say yes, write the law, as did not support one.
Should Arizona cops be allowed to check citizenship papers when they stop people for traffic violations/crime? By a 6 to 1 ratio you said yes.
A Muslim group has applied to build a $100 million community center and prayer space 2 blocks from what were the Twin Towers, and some have protested the project. I wanted to know what you think...and by a vote of 3:2, you said this is a bad idea. Those of you in favor said that to object is to keep the hate going, and that we need to take the high road, even surprise the Muslim community by agreeing. Some of those opposed asked where the money to build it is coming from. Others-for and against- asked if these peace-loving Muslims might be agreable (for the sake of peace) to moving the location of the project.
Here's advice you said grads would do well to follow: 1)"Learn to spell, or at least spell properly on your resume." Mark 2)"Take the high road. Whether it's owning up to a mistake, or a conflict with a friend, take the high road." Peggy 3)"Be humble." Donna 4)"Don't drink and drive." Logan 5)"Before you have sex or get pregnant, get married!" Theresa 6)"Learn how to dress (professionally), and volunteer." It shows you respect yourself. Steve 7)"Do your best, regardless whether you're volunteering, getting paid minimum wage, or getting paid more." Yvonne 8)"Follow your dreams." Bill, 10-yr owner of his own electrical contracting business (his dream!) 9)"Don't try to tell someone that's older than you how to do something." Goldy 10)"You gotta have a sense of humor about it all. If you don't, you die, or you live a very miserable life." Ron 11)"Don't call in sick too much or miss a lot of time because they may find out in the long run they don't need you that much." Mark 12)"Clean up your social network site, any appropriate pictures, pictures of you drinking, partying, cos your future employer could be looking at 'em." John 13)"Associate yourself with positive, optimistic people. Those are the people that get things done." Tim 14)"Don't miss out, cos the potential is always there. Just because some have passed you by, there's still more out there!" Teale 15)"Get organized." 16)"If you're not willing to do something right the first time, don't waste your or my time doing it, you'll just be doing it over." Paul from Lyndonville, on quotes posted at his workspace so long the ink's faded!
In a discussion about the President's 6-month moratorium on offshore drilling and the subsequent overturning of that ban by a federal judge in New Orleans, 60% of you said that the decision to keep drilling is the right one.
And how do you feel about the punishment for 3 seniors at Webster Schroeder suspended for the balance of the school year for starting a food fight in the cafeteria Wed (June 17th) that hurt no one but involved most of the senior class and disrupted the school day? They've been charged with disorderly conduct, and may not walk at graduation. In the final tally, you said 3:2 that the school's treatment is too severe, some saying that to have them clean up the mess would've been sufficient. Others wondered whether the outcry would've been different if someone got hurt.
There was great interest in the Memorial Day closing of Seabreeze Park, with reports saying it was due to word that a fight would be erupting at the park during business hours. You were split almost exactly down the middle on with half of you of the opinion that "the show must go on", the other half saying it was wise to close for a day. By only 2 votes, you said it was smart to close.
The Command Sargeant General of our military forces in Afghanistan has said that fast food places on the bases there must be shut down because, in his words, "it is a war zone, not an amusement park". He also said that the restauarants are using up water and power that need to be elsewhere. Asked how you feel about that, you were evenly split on whether our Burger Kings and Cinnabuns should be allowed to operate there.
The pothole hotline # for roads in the city is 3-1-1. To alert authorities about expressway potholes, call 800-768-4653. On county roads, it's 753-7700.
In the midst of heat from several different camps, Gov David Paterson has said his name will not be on the ballot come election day. Now there is pressure in the wake of alleged domestic violence committed by an aide and reported involvement by the governor in silencing it, for him not to serve out his present term. A Quinipiac University poll says 61% of us think he should finish. Asked what you thought, 55% of you said he should stay in office, that he's just making tough decisions we don't like!
If a patrol car is pulled to the side of the road with lights flashing, all but 3 states require that you move to the next lane over as you pass, or slow down 20mph. The 3 states where it is NOT law, are NY, Hawaii, and Maryland (see snopes.com).
Not one person who called the show on whether the Smithsonian should accept OJ's suit for display, thought it was a good idea! Though burning it, giving it to goodwill, the Wax Museum, Ripley's Believe It or Not or putting IT in jail got some interest! UPDATE: The Smithsonian is NOT interested.
Some of our top defense officials say it's time to repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and just let gays "come out" and serve. I asked particularly those of you who have served in the different wars and conflicts, your opinion. All but a few of you said that you'd have no problem serving with someone who was openly gay (or lesbian).
In November, Californians may be asked to accept or deny the legalization of marijuana. In April, a poll in that state showed 56% favor it. An on-air Legends poll says you are like-minded! 56.6% of you who responded said that yes, it should pass, allowing those age 21 and up to carry an oz of pot, and grow it for personal use. It could also be taxed!
Recently we talked about whether our state license plate needs a make-over. Other states' slogans are so much more inviting, so descriptive of an aspect of that state's selling points. NY's is an outline of the state and "Empire State"! Frank said to leave it alone. But others had suggestions:
"Land of FDR" "The Recreational State", for all the parks (or "Park Land State") "Welcoming the Masses to the Land of Dreams" (or "Gateway to Liberty") "The Lilac State" "The Land of Taxes" (true, yes, but not so strong as a tourism tool) "We Have it All" (biggest city, ocean frontage, Great Lakes, mountains, rivers, the 4 seasons) Along those lines, one caller suggested a picture of a pair of pants with the pockets turned out, and the slogan "ALBANY's got it all!" "The Welcoming State" (for our diversity) "So Much More Than You Think" "Four Seasons of Fun" "The All Season State" "See the Beauty" "The Fingerlakes State" "The Historic State" (for all the museums, women's rights, etc) "If You Can Make it Here, You Can Make it Anywhere" (once again, referencing our fiscal bumps, but don't people love a good challenge?) "A State For All Seasons"
In a survey of our listeners, you said by a ratio of 2:1 that grocery stores should not be allowed to sell wine. A proposal by Governor Paterson would allow licensed stores to stock the beverages, bringing in $ to help heal the state's fiscal weaknesses.
A USA Today/Gallup poll says that 78% of people surveyed recently said they approve of full body scanners being used at the airport for security purposes. In a Legends poll, 66% of you said you approve. The rest of you cited governmental interference, privacy issues and concern about the danger of the radiation, as reasons to disagree.
Monday mornings at 7:45 you Vote the Rock. We play two artists' recording of the same song and ask you to name a champ. Here are your picks:
"Mony Mony" by Tommy James and the Shondells got all but 2 of your votes when the contender was Billy Idol...guess his version won't be joining the format anytime soon!
"I Hear You Knockin"... Dave Edmunds versus Smiley Lewis. Smiley Lewis' version was the original, big on the R&B charts, but Edmunds' version charted at #4 in 1971. Only by a vote, Edmunds took this round.
"You Don't Have to Say You Love Me"...Dusty Springfield or Elvis? Her version is #491 on Rolling Stones' 500 Best Songs Ever list, but he's a legend. By a 5:4 ratio you gave her the win.
Who would've thought you'd prefer Amii Stewart's disco version of "Knock on Wood" in 1979, to Eddie Floyd? But it slipped by with 2 more votes than the 1966 recording. Who but Frank Sinatra could have a signature song that didn't chart for him? The song was "I've Got You Under My Skin" and by 3 votes you liked his version better than the recording that did rise, to #9 when the 4 Seasons put it out in 1966!
The Righteous Brothers' "You've Lost that Lovin' Feeling" gets your hearty endorsement, with just one lone vote for Hall & Oates' 1980 version.
No contest for "Leaving on a Jet Plane." John Denver (the song's composer) impressed only 3 of you. The rest sided with Peter, Paul and Mary. Maurice Williams wrote "Stay" out of an experience he had trying to convince his date not to go home at 10 like she was supposed to (he didn't succeed!). He was 15 then. Seven years later in 1960 he had a group called the Zodiacs that he recorded it and made hit status with. But who does the second best version...the Four Seasons in 1964, or Jackson Browne in 1977 when he used it to beg his audience to "stay"? You said the win definitely goes to JB. Phil Collins and the Mindbenders each did a version of "A Groovy Kind of Love." Which is better? 65% of you say the 1965 recording, which, while it wasn't the original (that belongs to Diane and Annita in '65), went to #2. Phil took it to the top of the charts in 1988. Pretty good, considering his intentions had been to have Stephen Bishop (gave us "On and On", and "It Might Be You" from the movie "Tootsie") record it!
Could Linda Ronstadt even get close to Buddy Holly in a vote count? You said "That'll Be the Day"!! Holly's original still rules, 53 years after it first got airplay.
With all the votes in, Crystal Bowersox' version of "Me and Bobby McGee" did surprisingly well up against Janis Joplin's #1 1971 cover! In the end, you voted Janis by a ratio of 4:3.
Andy Kim's version of "Rock Me Gently" didn't pitch a shut-out...but close. Gerry and the Pacemakers got one person liking their version of the tune that was a #1 for Kim in '74, but flat-lined in the '60's. To their credit, Gerry Marsden and co. were bigger US hit-makers than any group that came out of Liverpool, other than the Beatles. You said by a 3:1 margin that Tommy James and the Shondells' original 1968 version of "Crimson and Clover" topped Joan Jett and the Blackhearts'. The surprising part was that the 1981 re-make made a decent showing!
Put 2 version of "When Will I Be Loved" up for our listeners, and Linda gets the nod! Her 1975 cover got 4 more votes than the Everly Brothers' recording from 1960. Bobby Darin's version of "If I Were a Carpenter" aced Johnny Cash' by a long shot when we first made them a "Vote the Rock" months ago. So this was Round #2 for Bobby, and this time the choice was he or the 4 Tops (#20 in 1968). By about 2:1 you picked Darin again!
Could Aretha Franklin get any respect for her version of "Eleanor Rigby" (#17 in 1969)? No, not from you! You gave her a token 2 votes. The Beatles (#11 in 1966) are boss!
You say Janis Joplin still owns "Piece of My Heart". In a contest between she (with Big Brother and the Holding Co.) and Aretha's older sister Erma, Erma could only take 3 votes. The original by Franklin came out in 1967 and was big on the R&B charts; Janis was a #12 with it a year later in pop.
Surprise, surprise! Cissy Houston's version of "Midnight Train to Georgia" (the original in 1972) got only 3 votes less than the Gladys Knight and the Pips version that went to #1 a year later and became HER song!
Who could beat Stevie Wonder's "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" (#3 in 1970)? Certainly not Peter Frampton, though he made a good showing! His version was #18 in '77, and got half the number of votes Stevie Wonder got.
Paul Young's version of the song "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted" got only 2 of your votes when put up against the recording Jimmy Ruffin put out in 1966.
By 4 votes you chose the 1970 version of "Walking in the Rain" by Jay and the Americans over the original Ronettes recording. Thanks for the suggestion, Marc!
Not a single vote for the Beach Boys' charting version of "Rock & Roll Music" from 1976! Chuck Berry's original won the day. (The Beatles' cover didn't show up on the charts in '65).
Neither version of "I Only have Eyes for You" that was in the competition - the Flamingos' or Art Garfunkel's- was the original (it was written to add to the movie "Dames" in 1934), but your votes came in in equal numbers for these 2 recordings!
"Cupid" by Sam Cooke got all but 4 of your votes when pitted against the live version of the same tune by The Spinners.
Here's a surprise...Joe Cocker's version of The Letter" got one more vote than the original by The Box Tops in 1967, and won Vote the Rock!
The first version of "Feelin' Groovy" to get airplay (but not a place on the charts) in 1966...the Simon and Garfunkel recording won by a single vote when we played it side-to-side with Harper's Bizarre's version.
Votes for Ben E. King's "Spanish Harlem" led Aretha Franklin votes all along the way, and in the end you liked King's recording better by 3 votes. But her cover actually did better when it came out in 1971 (#2), than his (#10 when it was released in '61).
Smokey Robinson and the Miracles have nothing to worry about on Legends 102.7. We "shopped around" and offered up the Captain & Tennille version of that song, a #4 tune in 1976, but your votes said 2:1 that the 1960 recording is better.
Survey results say almost twice as many of you like the Donny Osmond (1971) version of "One Bad Apple" better than the Steve Lawrence recording from 1963. No votes for the Happenings.
You've heard and enjoyed Sammy Davis singing "If They Could See Me Now" on Legends. But in a Vote the Rock, he got only 2 more votes than challenger Gwen Verdon (who sang the song on Broadway).
David Lee Roth and Louis Prima each recorded "Just a Gigolo/I Ain't Nobody" and you said Louis is king! Who's got the better version of "Mack the Knife"? When the choices were Bobby Darin or Louis Armstrong, twice as many lined up behind Bobby!
No contest when it came to your favorite version of “Silhouettes.“ Yes, Herman's Hermits got 5 votes for their 1965 cover...but the Rays' 1957 version still won by a country mile!
"Breaking Up is Hard to Do"...Neil Sedaka in 1962 (fast) or Neil Sedaka in 1976 (ballad version)? By a slim margin you like the SLOW version better.
