May 13, 2024 – Jaws

Over the weekend, actress Susan Backlinie died at the age of 77. You probably don’t know her name, but you’ve probably seen her work – she played Chrissie Watkins, the first shark attack victim in the iconic opening scene of Jaws! She was also a stuntwoman and specialized in swimming work. Her scene took 3 days to shoot, with Berklinie strapped into a harness while the crew struggled to get the right effects. Contrary to popular belief, her screams weren’t from the harness injuring her as she was jerked back and forth in the water. No one warned her when she would be pulled underwater so they could get her genuine reaction. Jaws was shot mostly on location in Martha’s Vineyard, and it was the first movie to be shot on the ocean. This caused a lot of delays, and the movie wound up going over budget and over schedule. It was was a huge hit when it was released in 1975. It was the first movie to be released in more than 400 theaters in the U.S. and it was the first movie to gross over $100 million. It was the highest-grossing film of all time until Star Wars was released two years later. Learn more here.
