In honor of Halloween, we’re starting a spooky theme week on the Haunted History of 5 American Landmarks! Today we’re starting out with the Golden Gate Bridge. 84 years before the bridge was built, a steamship, the SS Tennesee, ran aground in the San Francisco Bay. Luckily all 550 people on board made it safely to shore and 14 chests of gold were salvaged before the ship was torn apart by the rough water. After the bridge opened, people started reporting seeing a phantom ship pass under the bridge. One of the most famous sightings happened in November 1942, when the crew of USS Kennison claimed to have sailed right past the ghost ship. They were so close that the Kennison crew could see that the Tennesee’s decks were unmanned. The ship was said to leave no wake and it didn’t show up on the Kennison’s radar.
