Elwood Edwards passed away this week. You probably don’t know his name, but if you ever used AOL back in the day, you surely know his voice! He’s the voice of AOL’s iconic “You’ve Got Mail”! His wife worked at Quantum Computer Services, which eventually became AOL. In 1989, she overheard the CEO talking about wanting to add a voice to their upcoming software, and she volunteered her Elwood. He was working at a local TV station at the time, where he mostly worked behind the scenes. He recorded his greetings in their living room on a cassette deck. At one time, AOL was the most recognized brand on the web in the U.S., and AOL Mail was the largest email service with over 9 million subscribers. Learn more in the audio below!
