Mark Shuttleworth spoke with Stephen Hoitt, Scout Executive for the Seneca Waterways Council.
-He talked about how scouting is for all ages and now includes Cub Scouts, kindergarten through 5th grade.
-They are also inclusive now and have boys and girls involved.
-Right now is their fall round up time as they are recruiting for more members
-Stephen said the Seneca Waterways Council has the highest participation rate in New York State.
-He talked about the importance of youth development and keeping kids active with physical development and that Scouts is one of the best ways to work on character development.
-The goal is to help each scout become the best citizen they can be while having fun and encouraging personal growth.
-Stephen gave an example of an Eagle Scout project with the Seneca Park Zoo. Cameron Haplin, an Eagle Scout, put this project together because he wanted to support the giraffes and make their environment more natural and engaging.
-He also talked about another Scout, Leora Blum, and her project to build Star Wars Droids and travel to conventions with them in order to raise money for children’s hospitals.
-Stephen encouraged people to support the local scouts with their annual popcorn sales.
