November 13, 2024 – Big Ben

On this day in 1856, Big Ben was first tested outside the Palace of Westminster in London. It’s important to note that Big Ben is the nickname for the largest bell in the clocktower, which was renamed Elizabeth Tower in 2012 to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. The Ben the bell is named after is up for debate. It could have been named after Sir Benjamin Hall, a politician and civil engineer who oversaw the bell installation. It also could be named for 19th-century English heavyweight boxing champion Ben Caunt. Learn more about this iconic U.K. landmark in the audio below!
