On this day in 1620, pilgrims aboard the Mayflower finally spot land in present-day Cape Cod. After 10 weeks at sea, the ship dropped anchor near the tip of Cape Cod, in what is now Provincetown Harbor. With Thanksgiving next week, I thought this was the perfect opportunity to clear up a misconception that we were all taught at school – that the pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock. Plymouth was actually the second place the pilgrims landed, and there is absolutely no historical evidence about Plymouth Rock. The pilgrims didn’t mention it in any of their writings, and it didn’t even gain public attention until 1741, more than 120 years after the Pilgrims arrived in Plymouth.
