Mark Shuttleworth interviewed Andrea Calloway, the Director of the Sunset House.
-She gave some history on the organization and how they started 37 years ago.
-Andrea explained what a comfort home is and how they operate
-She said there are about 12 to 15 of them in Monroe County
-The Sunset House has two beds and patients going there for end of life care are considered residents. This provides a much more friendly atmosphere and gives families the flexibility to be around their loved one more often.
-It is staffed 24/7 by trained employees that work with medical professionals and by volunteers.
-Mark gave a personal experience, his mother was at the Sunset House earlier this year.
-Andrea said they don’t accept insurance or federal money so they rely solely on donations.
-She encouraged people to volunteer and she gave examples of ways people could get involved. They need people to help them maintain the house and property in addition to caring for people.
