January 20, 2025 – Presidential Inaugurations

Today is Inauguration Day! Did you know it used to be in March? From 1793-1933, presidents were sworn in on March 4, the day when the federal government began operations under the U.S. Constitution in 1789. So there was basically a 4 month lame duck period between the election and inauguration. With advances in technology making it quicker to count votes and easier to travel, the 20th Amendment was ratified in 1933, moving inauguration day to January 20. There’s only one man who has both taken and administered the oath of office – William Howard Taft. Twelve years after he was sworn in as our 27th president, Taft was appointed chief justice of the Supreme Court. In that role, he administered the oath of office to Calvin Coolidge in 1925 and Herbert Hoover in 1929. The man with the longest inaugural address also had the shortest presidency. William Henry Harrison holds the record for longest-ever speech, which took nearly 2 hours and was 8,445 words. He died from pneumonia just a month later. The shortest speech? George Washington in 1793 with a short and sweet 135 words. Learn more about inaugurations past in the audio below!
