January 30, 2025 – 1980 Winter Olympics

It’s another Throwback Thursday on LEGENDS 102.7! Today our throwback year is 1980. That year, the Winter Olympics were held not too far from here, in Lake Placid! It was the second time Lake Placid hosted the Winter Games, having also done so in 1932. In all, 1,072 athletes from 37 countries competed in 38 official events. People’s Republic of China, Cyprus, and Costa Rica all participated in the Winter Olympic Games for the first time in 1980. The most memorable moment of the games was the iconic Miracle on Ice between the U.S. and Soviet men’s hockey teams. Though the Soviets were heavily favored, the young U.S. team achieved a stunning upset, winning 4-3. Two days later, the team won gold, defeating Finland in their final game. That wasn’t the only incredible story from the 1980 Winter Olympics, though. American speed skater Eric Heiden became the first person to win all 5 speed skating events that year, and he’s still the only athlete to win 5 gold medals at one Winter Games.
