The Super Bowl is coming up this weekend, and one of the biggest reasons to watch is for the halftime show. Early Super Bowl halftime shows looked very different than the ones we have today. In the first decade of the Super Bowl, the halftime show featured college marching bands. The very first Super Bowl in 1967 featured the University of Arizona and Grambling State University marching bands, along with trumpeter Al Hirt. It wasn’t until the 90s, to counter other networks’ efforts to counterprogram the game, that popular music acts headlined the show. Michael Jackson’s 1993 Super Bowl performance was a game-changer. It was the first time network ratings went up during the halftime show. With 1.3 billion viewers worldwide, it’s estimated to be one of the most-watched TV broadcasts of all time. It has been credited with establishing the standard for future halftime shows, and is ranked as being one of the greatest Super Bowl halftime shows of all time. Learn more in the audio below!
