Originally made by the Necco candy company, the candies were first popular for weddings, with witty sayings like \”Married in pink, he will take a drink\” and \”Married in white, you have chosen right\”. They originally came in various shapes like baseballs, seashells, watches, and horseshoes. Hearts weren’t added to the lineup until 1901. Necco went out of business in 2018, and the rights to Sweethearts candies were acquired by Spangler Candy Company.
