Cancer Support Community at Gilda’s Club – 2/23/25

Ed Smith interviewed Conor McKenna and Hunter Johnson, Associate Board Members at Cancer Support Community at Gilda’s Club in Rochester.
-Conor and Hunter are chairs for the upcoming Bachelor Auction event.
-They both talked about how they participated in previous Bachelor Auctions and then afterwards ended up getting more involved with Cancer Support Community and joining the Associate Board.
-They gave a description of the event, they talked about some of the activities and how it raises money for the organization.
-Conor and Hunter talked about some of the 27 bachelors that will be at the Bachelor Auction. They said the bachelors are doing a handful of community events leading up to the event so that they can fundraise and promote the Bachelor Auction.
-They encourage people to come for food and auction items even if they are not interested in bidding for a bachelor.
-Conor talked about some of the programs and services that Cancer Support Community offers and how all of them are offered at no cost to members
-He said that the idea is to make the environment at Cancer Support Community feel welcoming and provide a variety of support groups so that everyone can find one that works best for them.
-Conor said that assisting members with healthy meals and food insecurity is a priority this year as many folks end up not working or losing their job when they undergo treatment for cancer.
-They both emphasized how cancer affects everyone.
-They explained how the Associate Board is different from a traditional board of directors. It is composed of young professionals that assist with fundraising and executing a variety of events, all to support the Cancer Support Community.
