April 2, 2025 – Theme Week Day 3

We’re right in the middle of our theme week on Baseball Team Name Origins! Today we’re talking about the Los Angeles Dodgers. They were founded in 1883 in Brooklyn and were originally called the Brooklyn Bridegrooms when they joined the National League in 1890. Around the turn of the century, they were also informally named the Superbas and the Robins (after manager Wilbert Robinson). In the early 1900s, a sportswriter named Charles Dryden gave the team the nickname Trolley Dodgers, for the reputed skill of Brooklyn residents at evading the maze of trolley cars that weaved their way through the borough. In 1932, the team allowed Brooklyn sportswriters to choose a permanent name, and they decided on Dodgers. The team moved from Brooklyn to Los Angeles before the 1958 season, becoming one of the first West Coast teams, along with the San Francisco Giants. Learn more in the audio below!
