March 24, 2023 – NYC Subway

On this day in 1900, ground was broken for what would become the New York City subway system. Spurred on by the Great Blizzard of 1888, which made travel in NYC impossible for many days, a plan for construction of the subway was approved in 1894. It officially opened on October 27, 1904, making it one of the world’s oldest public transit systems. It had 28 stations when it opened, but today it has more stations than anywhere else in the world, with 472. It’s the busiest rapid transit system in the U.S. and in the Western hemisphere, but is the 11th busiest in the world. The busiest station today is the Times Square-42nd Street station, which services more than 65 million passengers a year. Learn more here.
