Denny’s recently announced that they’re closing 150 restaurants, 50 by the end of the year. The chain will be closing locations that are either too old to be remodeled or are in unprofitable areas. Denny’s was founded in 1953 in Lakewood, California. It started as Danny’s Donuts, before shifting to a 24-hour coffee shop and becoming Danny’s Coffee Shops. To avoid confusion with another local chain, Coffee Dan’s, the name was changed to Denny’s Coffee Shops in 1959 and eventually became known as just “Denny’s” in 1961.
