We’ve come to the end of our mini theme week on Thanksgiving dinner. So far, we’ve talked about the main dish and a side, so today we’re talking about everyone’s favorite Thanksgiving dessert – pumpkin pie! It turns out that pumpkin was a popular pie filling in England, so many of the Pilgrims on the Mayflower were just as familiar with pumpkins as the Native Americans who helped them survive their first year in the Plymouth Colony. Pumpkin was likely on the menu at the first Thanksgiving, but not in pie form. There was no butter or flour for the crust or sugar for the filling.
