December 4, 2024 – Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree

The iconic Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree will be lit tonight in New York City. This year’s tree is a 74-foot tall fir from West Stockbridge, Massachusetts, the first tree from that state since 1959! It’ll be lit with 50,000 LED lights with a 900-pound Swarovski star on top. The first Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center was put up in 1931, during the construction of Rockefeller Center. It was much less grandiose than today, with workers pooling their money to purchase a 20-foot tree and their families making garlands to decorate it. An estimated 125 million people visit the tree each year, which will stay up until at least January 6. After the tree is taken down, it’ll be donated to Habitat for Humanity, where it will be made into lumber to use for building homes. Learn more in the audio below!
