Happy Throwback Thursday! Today’s throwback year is 1973, the year the world was introduced to Hagar the Horrible! The Hagar the Horrible comic strip first appeared on February 4 that year and was immediately popular. It was created by Dik Browne, who got his start drawing courtroom sketches in New York City, before working for an ad agency, where among other things, he created the logo for Chiquita Banana. “Hagar the Terrible” was a nickname given to Browne by his sons when he playfully chased them around the house. He changed it to “Hagar the Horrible” because he liked the alliteration. The characters are all loosely based on his family and friends, and the comic strip became the fastest growing comic strip in history. Learn more in the audio below.
