The music world lost a legend today. Roberta Flack died this morning at the age of 88. She topped the Billboard charts with the No. 1 singles “The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face”, “Killing Me Softly with His Song”, and “Feel Like Makin’ Love”. Flack was also the first artist to win back-to-back Grammy Awards for Record of the Year, winning for “The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face” in 1973 and “Killing Me Softly With His Song” in 1974. Her first album didn’t sell particularly well until Clint Eastwood chose to use “The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face” in his directorial debut Play Misty for Me. Thanks to him and that movie, the song became the biggest hit of the year in 1972 and earning Flack a million-selling Gold disc. She also did many duets over the year, with artists like Donny Hathaway, Peabo Bryson, and Maxi Priest. She found renewed success in the mid-90s when the Fugees recorded a Grammy-winning version of “Killing Me Softly”. In late 2022, it was announced that Flack had been diagnosed with ALS and had to retire from performing as the disease made it “impossible to sing”.
