Colossal Biosciences, a Dallas-based biotech company, recently announced that it has brought dire wolves back from extinction. No, they aren’t just characters in Game of Thrones! They roamed the Americas 125,000 to 10,000 years ago. The DNA from the fossils of dire wolves was extracted and used to edit the genes of their closest living relative, gray wolves. Three pups were born, named Romulus, Remus, and Khaleesi. They’re 3 to 6 months old now, and have dire wolf traits like long white fur, muscular jaws, and a large body. Like wolves, they have a natural wariness around humans, maintaining their distance even from their handlers. The pups already weigh 80 pounds and are projected to be 6 feet long and weigh 150 pounds at full maturity. They’re currently living in an undisclosed ecological preserve here in the U.S. Colossal says they represent the first living examples of dire wolves since the species went extinct 10,000 years ago. Dire wolf fossils have been found all over North and South America, but the largest collection has been obtained from the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles. Learn more in the audio below!
